Clinical Application of Primal Movement Patterns
Course description
Most allied health training still centres on isolated muscle testing — assessing individual muscles for strength and length, separate from the movements they actually serve. But patients don't present with an isolated hamstring problem; they present with difficulty getting off the floor, picking up a grandchild, or walking without pain. This course reframes clinical assessment around functional movement patterns instead, giving you a faster, more clinically relevant screening approach you can start using the same day.
Across four short modules, you'll learn a complete system: a 3-point scoring matrix for rapid screening, a decision framework for turning scores into specific exercise progressions and regressions, and a real clinical case that ties it all together. The course closes with a self-directed worksheet, where you apply the framework to one of your own current patients — not a hypothetical — so what you learn leaves with a real plan attached to it.
What you'll learn:
The seven primal movement patterns (squat, hinge, lunge, push, pull, rotation, gait) and why they give you more functionally predictive information than isolated muscle testing
How to run a complete 7-pattern clinical screen in under 10 minutes, using equipment already in your clinic
A 3-point scoring system (pain-free/full range, pain-free/compensated, pain present) for rapid, repeatable assessment
A clear decision rule for when to regress, hold, or progress each pattern — and specific exercise examples for each
How to apply pattern-level reasoning to a real case: a 55-year-old desk worker with mild lower back pain and a compensated hip-hinge pattern
How to translate this framework directly onto your own caseload, with a structured worksheet and a defined re-screening timeline
Format: ~3 hours of self-paced content, including readers, a screening checklist, a progression/regression reference guide, and a fillable self-reflection worksheet.
